A topological group \(G\) has automatic continuity if every homomorphism from \(G\) to any separable topological group is continuous, see [\textit{C. Rosendal}, Bull. Symbolic Logic 15, No. 2, 184--214 (2009; Zbl 1173.03037)] for a survey on automatic continuity. The second author and \textit{A. Thom} [Adv. Math. 346, 124--169 (2019; Zbl 1419.46038)] showed that every homomorphism from a finite-dimensional projective unitary group PU\((n)\) or special unitary group SU\((n)\), \(n \in \mathbb{N}\), endowed with the norm topology, to any separable SIN group is continuous, where a topological group is called SIN (Small Invariant Neighborhoods) if the identity admits a neighborhood basis consisting of conjugacy-invariant open sets. In the paper under review, that authors extend the latter result. They show that every homomorphism from a compact connected simple Lie group to any separable SIN group is continuous. To do so the authors study more generally topological groups \(G\) that have the invariant automatic continuity property, that is, every group homomorphism from \(G\) to any separable SIN group is continuous. They obtain various characterizations of invariant automatic continuity. Since a compact connected simple Lie group is SIN and admits a bi-invariant metric and because, by the second author and Thom [loc. cit.], every invariant Steinhaus group has the invariant automatic continuity property, it suffices to show that every compact connected simple Lie group of rank \(r\) has the invariant Steinhaus property with exponent \(8r^2\), which then yields the desired result.
