Let \(X\) be a real Banach space and denote by \(B_X\) its closed unit ball. A famous result by Bourgain says that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of \(B_X\) contains a convex combination of slices of \(B_X\) (cf., e.g., [\textit{N. Ghoussoub} et al., Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 378, 116 p. (1987; Zbl 0651.46017)], Lemma II.1). Also, it is known that there are Banach spaces where there are convex combinations of slices which are not relatively weakly open. The paper [\textit{T. A. Abrahamsen} and \textit{V. Lima}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 146, No. 10, 4421--4427 (2018; Zbl 1401.46005)] initiated the study what Banach spaces have the property that every convex combination of slices of \(B_X\) is relatively weakly open by proving that this is true for \(C(K)\) spaces if the compact space \(K\) is scattered. In the same paper, the following properties were introduced: \begin{itemize} \item[(W1)] Every convex combination of slices of \(B_X\) is relatively weakly open. \item[(W2)] The relative weak interior of each convex combination of slices of the unit ball is nonempty. \item[(CS)] Every convex combination of slices of the unit ball intersects the unit sphere. \end{itemize} The authors of the paper under review introduce also the analogous properties of (W1), (W2), and (CS) for the norm topology and the weak*-topology. This paper gives a nice survey of all of these properties and their interrelations. The main result says that a Banach space \(X\) has (CS) if and only if for every convex combination of slices \(C\) of \(B_X\) there are \(x,y\in C\) such that \(\|x-y\|=2\). This answers a question posed by Abrahamsen and Lima [loc.\,cit.]. The paper ends by characterising the weak* properties (W*1) and (W*2) for \(L_\infty(\mu)\) by requiring that \(\mu\) is purely atomic.
