Let \(L/K\) be a degree \(p^n\) totally ramified Galois extension of local fields, where \(K\) has residue field of characteristic \(p\). In this difficult setting for computation of additive Galois module structure, two conditions have been studied: the Galois scaffolds introduced by \textit{M. V. Bondarko} [Contemp. Math. 300, 27--57 (2002; Zbl 1026.11088)] and the semistability property as considered in [\textit{N. P. Byott} et al., Ann. Inst. Fourier 68, No. 3, 965--1010 (2018; Zbl 1423.11201)]. Here the two are related; in particular it is shown that the extension \(L/K\) is semistable if and only if it has a Galois scaffold. Furthermore, stability of the extension is also shown to be implied by certain conditions on the Galois scaffolds.
