Abstract: Let K be a local field and let L/K be a totally ramified Galois extension of degree pn. Being semistable and possessing a Galois scaffold are two conditions which facilitate the computation of the additive Galois module structure of L/K. In this note we show that L/K is semistable if and only if L/K has a Galois scaffold. We also give sufficient conditions in terms of Galois scaffolds for the extension L/K to be stable.

Let \(L/K\) be a degree \(p^n\) totally ramified Galois extension of local fields, where \(K\) has residue field of characteristic \(p\). In this difficult setting for computation of additive Galois module structure, two conditions have been studied: the Galois scaffolds introduced by \textit{M. V. Bondarko} [Contemp. Math. 300, 27--57 (2002; Zbl 1026.11088)] and the semistability property as considered in [\textit{N. P. Byott} et al., Ann. Inst. Fourier 68, No. 3, 965--1010 (2018; Zbl 1423.11201)]. Here the two are related; in particular it is shown that the extension \(L/K\) is semistable if and only if it has a Galois scaffold. Furthermore, stability of the extension is also shown to be implied by certain conditions on the Galois scaffolds.
