Fundamental algebras play an important role in the theory of algebras with polynomial identities in characteristic zero. They are defined in terms of multialternating polynomials non vanishing on them. Here, the authors give a characterization of fundamental algebras in terms of representations of symmetric groups obtaining this way an equivalent definition. As an application, they determine when a finitely generated Grassmann algebra is fundamental. Let us illustrate the fundamental algebra notion. In sequence of papers of A. Berele, A. Giambruno, S. Mischenko, A. Regev, M. Zaicev and others the codimention sequence in characteristic zero was studied. The codimension growth of a variety \(\mathfrak M\) is determined by semidirect products of \(T\)-prime varieties in \(\mathfrak M\). A similar situation was established by reviewer for \(GK\)-dimension: Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of a \(s>1\)-generated relatively free algebra from \(\mathfrak M\) is determined by block-triangular matrices in \(\mathfrak M\) (see [\textit{A. Ya. Belov}, Sb. Math. 195, No. 12, 1703--1726 (2004; Zbl 1090.16007); translation from Mat. Sb. 195, No. 12, 3--26 (2004)]). \textit{A. R. Kemer}'s solution of the celebrated Specht's problem [Transl., Ser. 2, Am. Math. Soc. 148, 65--71 (1991; Zbl 0736.16013)] deal with the so-called \textit{Kemer index} -- the sum of dimensions of simultaneously connected by radical simple components and essential radical nilpotency index. Fundamental algebras are minimal algebras with minimal Kemer index.
