Let \(E_{nr}(f)_2\) be the best approximation of a \(2\pi \)-periodic function \(f\in L_2\) by the \(2n\)-dimensional space \(S_{nr}\) of periodic splines of degree \(r\) of minimal defect with knots \(j\pi /n ,\ j\in Z\). It is proved that if \(r,n\in Z\), then \[ E_{nr}(f)_2\leq {\frac{1}{\sqrt {2}} \omega (f, \theta_r\pi/n)_2},\] where \(\omega \) is the first modulus of comtinuity of \(f\) in \(L_2.\) A method for calculating a positive constant \(\theta_r \) is indicated. The constant \(\frac{1}{\sqrt {2}}\) cannot be improved on the entire \(L_2\) even by increasing the step of the modulus \(\omega \).
