Let \(U\) be a normed vector space over \(\mathbb{R}\) and \(A(U)\) the space of Gâteaux differentiable operators on \(U\). Two internal operations are defined on \(A(U)\). The first one is a commutator, called the \(\mathscr{G}\)-\textit{commutator} and given in terms of a general map \(\mathscr{G}: U\times U \to U\) which is linear in the second argument. For \(u\in U\), the linear partial map \(\mathscr{G}(u, \cdot)\) is denoted \(\mathscr{G}_u\). The second operation is an extension of the former, called the the \((\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})\)-\textit{product} and given in terms of two endomorphisms \(\mathscr{S}_u\) and \(\mathscr{T}_u\) of \(U\). Conditions are found for \(A(U)\) equipped with the \((\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})\)-product, that is, for the algebra \(\langle{A(U); (\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})}\rangle\) to be Lie-admissible, or equivalently, for \(\langle{A(U); (\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})}\rangle\) to be a Lie algebra with respect to the adjoint bracket defined by the \((\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})\)-product. For a given operator \(N\in A(U)\), a symmetry \(S=S(u)\) of the operator equation \(N(u)=0\) is defined as the infinitesimal generator of the transformation \(\bar{u}= u+ \varepsilon S(u)\) leaving the operator equation invariant for sufficiently small values of \(\varepsilon\). Denoting by \(G\) the set of all symmetries of the operator \(N\), and letting \(\mathscr{S}_u, \mathscr{T}_u\) and \(\mathscr{G}_u\) be recursion operators for \(N(u)=0\), conditions are established for \(G\) to be a Lie-admissible algebra with respect to the corresponding \((\mathscr{S}, \mathscr{T})\)-product or \(\mathscr{G}\)-commutator. Some illustrative examples of application of Lie-admissible algebras to the mechanics of infinite dimensional systems, and to the more specific case of a motion equation are discussed.
