Given a domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{C}^d\), \(d\ge1\), a Carathéodory extremal function on \(\Omega\) has the property that, for some pair of points \(z,w\in\Omega\) \((z\neq w)\), it maximises over all analytic maps \(F:\Omega\mapsto\mathbb{D}\) the Poincaré distance from \(F(z)\) to \(F(w)\). In this case, such a function is said to solve the Carathéodory extremal problem for the pair \(z,w\). The authors consider, besides the unit disc \(\mathbb{D}\), the bidisc \(\mathbb{D}^2\) and the symmetrized bidisc \(G=\{(z+w,zw):(z,w)\in \mathbb{D}^2\}\), which are characterized via the existence of small classes of analytic maps, which are sufficient to solve all Carathéodory extremal problems in these domains.
