The authors consider noncommutative function spaces for a semifinite von Neumann algebra \(\mathcal{M}\) with a faithful semifinite normal trace \(\tau.\) For a space of measurable functions \(E(0,\infty)\) with a \(\Delta\)-norm \(\|\cdot\|_E\), the corresponding noncommutative function space \(E(\mathcal{M},\tau)\) is defined to be the space of \(\tau\)-measurable operators \(X\) such that \(\mu(X)\in E(0,\infty)\), with \(\Delta\)-norm \(\|X\|_E:=\|\mu(X)\|_E,\) where \(\mu(\cdot)\) denotes decreasing rearrangement. It is known that there exist symmetric operator spaces that are not interpolation spaces for the couple \((L_1(\mathcal{M},\tau),\mathcal{M}).\) As shown by the authors, the situation is different if we replace \(L_1\) with \(L_0\): an arbitrary symmetrically \(\Delta\)-normed noncommutative function space is an interpolation space for the couple \((L_0(\mathcal{M},\tau),\mathcal{M}).\) The \(\mathcal{K}\)-functional is investigated in detail and several applications of the main theorem to the description of orbits and \(\mathcal{K}\)-orbits of \(\tau\)-measurable operators are given.
