The authors obtain sufficient conditions for self-maps of compact surfaces (or manifolds) to guarantee the positiveness of their topological entropies, thus implying chaos in a certain sense. These conditions are phrased using the coefficients of the Lefschetz zeta functions on rational homology groups. The classes of \(C^\infty\) or \(C^0\) maps and the classes of orientable or non-orientable surfaces (or manifolds) are quite narrow. At the same time, the same classes are also exhaustive because the authors have listed almost all cases for which the properties on coefficients are available.
