The celebrated Beurling theorem on the disk offers a definitive and simple description of all Hilbert analytic submodules of the Hardy space. While in several variables the situation is more complex, a variety of partial results à la Beurling are known with great benefits for the bounded analytic interpolation theory and model theory for commuting systems of contractive operators. The present note describes such a fortunate situation, under the assumption of double commutativity of the orthogonal complement of a Hilbert analytic submodule of the Hardy space of the polydisc. The author classifies all submodules with this double commutativity property: They are either of finite codimention, or the polydisk has complex dimension two. The consequences of this classification are multiple, deep, and in perfect accord to the theory of a single linear contractive operator.
