Let \(E/F\) be a Galois extension of number fields of degree \(d\) with Galois group \(\Gamma\) and let \(t>1\) be an integer. The main result of this paper is the following Galois stability theorem: There is a constant \(N\) such that for every integer \(n\geq N\) there is an abelian \(\Gamma\)-stable subgroup \(G\subset\text{GL}_n(E)\) of exponent \(t\) with \(E=F(G)\), where \(F(G)\) is the field obtained from \(F\) by adjoining all matrix coefficients for all matrices \(g\in G\). More precisely, \(N\) can be chosen to be equal to \([E(\zeta_t):E]\cdot d\), where \(\zeta_t\) denotes a primitive \(t\)-th root of unity. It is also shown that this is the best possible choice for \(N\). Moreover, the interplay between the existence of \(\Gamma\)-stable groups \(G\) over number fields (i.e.~subgroups of \(\text{GL}_n(E)\)) and over the rings of integers in number fields (i.e.~subgroups of \(\text{GL}_n(\mathcal O_E)\)) is studied in some detail.
