The authors derive sufficient conditions for the existence of eventually positive solutions for a general class of higher order delay differential equations which are subject to nonlinear impulses occurring at prescribed time instances. For this purpose, they make use of cutoff solutions, comparison principles and the Knaster-Tarski fixed point theorem. For the two-dimensional case, the results are sharp in the sense that they are obtained in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions. The main motivation behind this paper is to patch up and generalize several previous results of other authors, with a specific focus on \textit{X. Wu} et al. [Appl. Math. Comput. 145, No. 2--3, 561--567 (2003; Zbl 1044.34022)] and \textit{X. Li} [``Oscillation properties of higher order impulsive delay differential equations'', Int. J. Diff. Equat. 2, 209--219 (2007)].
