For an unbounded operator \(S\) on a Banach space \(X\) whose resolvent is uniformly bounded along the imaginary axis, the existence of invariant subspaces corresponding to its spectrum in the left half-plane \({\mathbb C}_{-}\) and right half-plane \({\mathbb C}_{+}\) is proved. Let us present one of the main results (Theorem 4.1) explicitly. Let \(S\) be a linear operator on \(X\) such that \(\{ \lambda \in {\mathbb C}:|\operatorname{Re}(\lambda)|\leq h\}\) is contained in the resolvent set \(\rho(S)\) for some \(h>0\) and \(M:=\sup\{ \| (S-\lambda)^{-1}\|:|\operatorname{Re}(\lambda)|\leq h\}<\infty\). Then the following statements hold. {\parindent=8mm \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] By \( G_{\pm}=\{ x\in X:\, (S-\lambda)^{-1}x \text{ has a bounded analytic extension to } \overline{{\mathbb C}_{\pm}}\}\) are defined closed subspaces of \(X\) which are invariant for \(S\) and \((S-\lambda)^{-1}\) and satisfy \(\sigma(S)=\sigma(S|G_{+})\cup \sigma(S|G_{-})\), \(\sigma(S|G_{\pm})=\sigma(S)\cap {\mathbb C}_{\pm}\), and \(\| (S|G_{\pm}-\lambda)^{-1}\| \leq M\) for \(\lambda \in \overline{{\mathbb C}_{\mp}}\). \item [(ii)] Let \[ A_{\pm}=\frac{\pm 1}{2\pi i}\int_{\pm h-i\infty}^{\pm h^+i\infty}\frac{1}{\lambda^2}(S-\lambda)^{-1}\,d\lambda. \] Then the operators \(P_{\pm}=S^2 A_{\pm}\) are closed complementary projections with domains \({\mathcal D}(P_{+})={\mathcal D}(P_{-})=G_{+}\oplus G_{-}\) such that \(G_{\pm}=\operatorname{Im}(P_{\pm})=\operatorname{Ker}(A_{\mp})\). \item [(iii)] \({\mathcal D}(S^2)\subseteq {\mathcal D}(P_{\pm})\) and \[ P_{\pm} x=\frac{\pm 1}{2\pi i}\int_{\pm h-i\infty}^{\pm h^+i\infty}\frac{1}{\lambda^2}(S-\lambda)^{-1}S^2 x\,d\lambda,\quad x\in {\mathcal D}(S^2). \] \end{itemize}} The paper is well written with an instructive introductory part and contains several interesting results.
