\textit{H. Minkowski} [Verh. d. 3. intern. Math.-Kongr. Heidelb., 164--173 (1905; JFM 36.0281.01)] introduced the question mark function \(?(x)\), which is a function mapping the quadratic irrationals to the rationals. The function \(?(x)\) is a distribution function on \([0,1]\) defining a continuous singular measure with support on \([0,1]\). The authors of the present paper are interested in the sequence of (monic) orthonormal polynomials for this measure, and in particular on the coefficients of their three-term recurrence relation. This problem should be seen in connection with the still open problems concerning the Fourier coefficients of \(?(x)\). The present paper contains extensive numerical investigations concerning the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation, as well as numerical investigations concerning the moments of \(?(x)\). Related investigations have been carried out by \textit{G. Alkauskas} [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 350, No. 3--4, 137--140 (2012; Zbl 1247.11011)] and [in: Analytic and probabilistic methods in number theory. Proceedings of the 5th international conference in honour of J. Kubilius, Palanga, Lithuania, September 4--10, 2011. Vilnius: TEV. 19--33 (2012; Zbl 1305.11005)]. The paper ends with a collection of open problems.
