Let \(R\) be a commutative associative unital ring with an endomorphim \(\sigma\). Fix an element \(t\in R\) and define a weak generalized Weyl algebra \(A=A(R,\sigma,t)\) as \(R\)-algebra with generators \(X,Y\) subject to the defining relations \[ YX=t,\qquad XY=\sigma(t),\qquad Xr=\sigma(r)X,\qquad rY=Y\sigma(r) \] for all \(r\in R\). In the case when \(\sigma\) is an automorphism this class of algebras was introduced by \textit{V. V. Bavula} [St. Petersbg. Math. J. 4, No. 1, 71-92 (1993); translation from Algebra Anal. 4, No. 1, 75-97 (1992; Zbl 0807.16027)]. For a maximal ideal \(\mathfrak m\) of \(R\) and an \(A\)-module \(M\) denote by \(M_{\mathfrak m}\) the set of all elements in \(M\) annihilated by \(\mathfrak m\). A module \(M\) is a generalized weight module if \(M\) is the direct sum of \(M_{\mathfrak m}\) for all \(\mathfrak m\). The first main result of the paper gives a classification of simple weight \(A\)-modules. The endomorphism \(\sigma\) is essential if the canonical map \(\sigma(R)/(\sigma(R)\cup\mathfrak m)\to R/\mathfrak m\) is a bijection. This is always the case when \(\sigma\) is an automorphism. Suppose that \(R\) is an algebra over a field and \(\sigma\) is an essential \(k\)-linear endomorphism. Then every finite dimensional \(A\)-module is a weight module. These results are extended to generalized Heisenberg algebras.
