Let \((X,\Sigma, \mu)\) be a complete \(\sigma\)-finite measure space. For a sub-\(\sigma\)-finite algebra \(\mathcal{A}\subseteq \Sigma\), the \(L^{2}\)-space \(L^{2}(X,\mathcal{A},\mu|_A)\) is simply denoted by \(L^{2}(\mathcal{A})\). For a sub-\(\sigma\)-finite algebra \(\mathcal{A}\subseteq \Sigma\), the conditional expectation operator \(E^{\mathcal{A}}\) on \(L^{2}(\mathcal{A})\) is uniquely determined by \[ \int_{A}f\, d\mu=\int_{A}E^{\mathcal{A}}f\, d\mu \quad\text{for all }A\in \mathcal{A}. \] We use the notation \(E\) instead of \(E^{\mathcal{A}}\) here. For a measurable function \(u:X\to \mathbb{C}\), let \(M_{u}\) be a multiplication operator on \(L^{0}(X)\), i.e., \(M_{u}f:=u.f\) for \(f\in L^{0}(X)\). In this paper, the author considers a bounded linear operator \(T=M_{w}EM_{u}\) on \(L^{2}(X)\) for measurable functions \(u,w\). Necessary and sufficient conditions that \(T\) is an \(A\)-class operator \((|T^2|\geq |T|^{2})\) or a \(*\)-A-class operators \((|T^2|\geq |T^{*}|^{2})\) are obtained. Moreover, the author present some spectrum properties of \(T\). One of them is an extension of a result due to \textit{J. D. Herron} [Oper. Matrices 5, No. 1, 107--118 (2011; Zbl 1263.47041)]. Reviewer's remark. Note that the author uses the symbol \(\sigma_{jp}\) and calls it ``joint point spectrum''. But this is not correct. We usually use the symbol \(\sigma_{np}\) and call it ``normal point spectrum'' in this case.
