A nonzero element \(e\) in an Archimedean Riesz space \(E\) is called discrete if \(|x| \leq e\) implies \(x = te\) for some \(t \in \mathbb R\). \(E\) is called discrete if every \(x \in E_{+} /\{0\}\) dominates a discrete element. A Riesz space \(E\) is called continuous if \(E\) does not contain discrete elements. \(E\) is said to be heterogeneous if it is neither discrete nor continuous. Sequence spaces \(l^p , c_0\) are discrete spaces, function spaces \(L^p [0, 1]\), \(C[0, 1]\) are continuous, while products \(l^p \times C[0, 1]\), \(c_0 \times L^p\) are heterogeneous. The following theorem was proved by the author in [Can. Math. Bull. 56, No. 2, 434--441 (2013; Zbl 1275.46004)]. Theorem. Let \(I\) be a closed infinite-dimensional and infinite-codimensional ideal in a Banach lattice \(E\). Then there exists a closed separable discrete and \(\sigma\)-Dedekind complete Riesz subspace \(G\) such that \(I \cap G = 0\) and \(I + G\) is not closed. The aim of the present paper is to complete the preceding theorem by showing that for many closed ideals \(F\) there exist closed continuous (and closed heterogeneous) Riesz subspaces for which the sum with \(F\) is not closed. The following theorems are the main results of the paper. Theorem. Let \(E\) be a \(\sigma\)-Dedekind complete Banach lattice and \(F\) be a closed infinite-dimensional ideal such that the quotient norm on \(E/F\) is not order continuous. Then there exist a closed, continuous Riesz subspace \(G_1 \subset E\) and a closed heterogeneous Riesz subspace \(G_2 \subset E\) such that \(F \cap G_i = \{0\}\) and \(F + G_i\) is not closed for \(i = 1, 2\). For Banach lattices with order continuous norm, we have the following result. Theorem. Let \(E\) be a continuous Banach lattice with order continuous norm. If \(F \subset E\) is a nontrivial band, then there exist a continuous closed Riesz subspace \(H_1 \subset E\) and a closed heterogenous Riesz subspace \(H_2 \subset E\) such that \(F \cap H_i = \{0\}\) and \(F + H_i\) is not closed for \(i = 1, 2\).
