The authors show that for certain integer values of \((n,q)\) there do not exist generalized bent functions \(f: (\mathbb Z/q \mathbb Z)^n \to \mathbb Z/q \mathbb Z\). The results of Theorem 4 (and Corollaries 5 and 6) are obtained by Schmidt's field descent method and previous results of \textit{F. Liu} et al. [Sci. China, Ser. A 45, No. 6, 721--730 (2002; Zbl 1114.11091)]. To prove that there does not exist a generalized bent function for the parameters \((3, 2\cdot 23^e)\) (Theorem 12) the authors use the arithmetic of the cyclotomic field \(\mathbb Q (\zeta_{23})\).
