The authors study the geometry of surfaces in \({\mathbb R}^3\) with corank \(1\) singularities. They introduce a new tool, called the curvature parabola, using the first and second fundamental forms of the surface. It contains all the local second order geometrical informations about the surface, and induces the definitions of the asymptotic directions and of the umbilic curvature function on the singular set of the surface. These concepts are related to contact properties of the surface with planes and spheres.
