The authors consider the fractional derivative operator \[ D^\sigma f(x)= \int_X{f(x)- f(y)\over d(x-y)^{1+\sigma}}\,d\mu(y),\quad 0<\sigma<1, \] as a space \(X\) of homogeneous type, namely a quasi-metric space with a doubling measure \(\mu\), such as manifolds and typical fractals. In the space \(X\), a distance \(d\) and a dyadic family \(D\) are defined, see [\textit{M. Christ}, Colloq. Math. 60/61, No. 2, 601--628 (1990; Zbl 0758.42009)]. Precise results are given for the solutions of the Cauchy problem \[ \begin{gathered} \partial u/\partial t=- D^\sigma u(x,t),\quad x\in X,\quad t>0,\\ u(x,0)= f(x),\end{gathered} \] by generalizing to such framework what is known in the Euclidean case \(X=\mathbb{R}^n\).
