A space \(X\) is monotonically star-compact provided that for each open cover \(\mathcal U\) of \(X\) there is a compact subset \(c(\mathcal U)\subset X\) such that the star of \(c(\mathcal U)\) in \(\mathcal U\) is \(X\) and \(c(\mathcal U)\subset c(\mathcal V)\) whenever \(\mathcal V\) refines \(\mathcal U\). Various properties of star-compactness are investigated. For example: every Tychonoff space may be embedded as a closed subspace of a Tychonoff monotonically star-compact space; continuous maps preserve star-compactness. On the other hand a monotonically star-compact space having a regular-closed subspace which is not monotonically star-compact is exhibited.
