The geometry of Banach spaces has been intensively developed because of many applications. Obviously, rotundity and uniform rotundity are fundamental in the geometry of Banach spaces. The monotonicity properties (strict and uniform monotonicity) play an analogous role in the geometry of Banach lattices. However, the studies of global properties are not always sufficient. When the Banach space (Banach lattice) does not possess a global property, then it is natural to ask about the structure of a separated point. This takes us to the notion of an extreme point in Banach spaces and to the notion of a point of lower and upper monotonicity in Banach lattices, respectively. Such a local geometry has recently been deeply investigated. Recall that the local structure of a separated point in a Banach lattice has applications to local best dominated approximation problems in Banach lattices. The author presents a local approach to the strict \(K\)-monotonicity and to the local uniform rotundity in symmetric spaces. He studies relations between the points of strict \(K\)-monotonicity, the points of strict monotonicity and the points of the Kadec-Klee property for global convergence in measure in symmetric spaces. Moreover, he characterizes the points of upper strict \(K\)-monotonicity in the Lorentz spaces \(\Gamma _{p,w}. \) Next, the author considers points of local uniform rotundity in symmetric spaces. In this context, he describes relations between the point \( x,\) the point \(\left| x\right| \) and the nonincreasing rearrangement \( x^{\ast }\). Finally, he applies these results to characterize the local uniform rotundity in the Lorentz spaces \(\Gamma _{p,w}\).
