The paper focuses on the second-order delay differential equation (DDE) with three parameters \[ \begin{cases} y^{\prime \prime }(t)=ay^{\prime }(t)+by(t)+cy(t-\tau ),\text{ \;\;}t\in (0,T], \\ y(t)=g(t),\text{ \;\;}t\in [ -\tau ,0], \\ y^{\prime }(t)=g^{\prime }(t),\text{ \;\;}t\in [ -\tau ,0], \end{cases} \] where \(a,b,c\in \mathbb{R},\) the delay term \(\tau >0\), \(g(t)\) is a continuous real-valued function and \(b\geq 0.\) For this DDE the authors study the delay-dependent stability of symmetric boundary value methods (BVMs), which are characterized by very good stability properties. The numerical stability region is obtained and conditions are provided to guarantee that symmetric BVMs retain the asymptotic stability of the true solution of the considered DDE. Numerical examples enlighten the theoretical results.
