The authors prove vanishing results of étale cohomology of unitary Shimura varieties after localising at certain Hecke ideals. One of the main results of their paper is: {Theorem A.} Let \(X\) be a projective \(\mathrm{U}(2,1)\)-Shimura variety of some sufficiently small level, and let \(\mathcal{F}\) be a canonical local system of \(\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p\)-vector spaces on \(X\). Let \(\mathfrak{m}\) be a maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra acting on the cohomology \(H^{\bullet}_{\mathrm{et}}(X,\mathcal{F})\) and suppose that there is a Galois representation \(\rho _{\mathfrak{m}}: G_F \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_3(\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p)\) associated to \(\mathfrak{m}\). Futhermore, suppose that we have \(\mathrm{SL}_3(k) \subset \rho _{\mathfrak{m}} (G_F) \subset \bar{\mathbb{F}}_p ^{\times} \mathrm{SL}_3(k)\) for some finite extension \(k/\mathbb{F}_p\) and that \(\rho _{\mathfrak{m} | G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}}\) is \(1\)-regular and irreducibe. Then the localisations \(H^i _{\mathrm{et}} (X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}, \mathcal{F})_{\mathfrak{m}}\) vanish in degrees \(i \not = 2\). This theorem is then used to establish certain cases of the weight part of the Serre conjecture for \(\mathrm{U}(2,1)\).
