The waiting time phenomena to the problem Cauchy for a porous medium equation with a nonlinear gradient absorption \[ {u_t} = \Delta {u^m} - {\left| {\nabla u} \right|^q}, \quad (x,t) \in {\mathbb R^N} \times (0,\infty), \tag{1} \] \[ u(0,x) = {u_0}(x), \quad x \in {\mathbb R^N} \tag{2} \] where \(N\geq 1\) and \(m,\) \(q>1\) are studied. According to the nonlinearity in the diffusion and the convection terms, some sufficient conditions on the initial data are given for the existence of the waiting time. The main result of this paper is the following theorem. Theorem 1.1. Assume that \(N\geq 1\), \(1<q<m\), and the initial data \(u_0(x)\) satisfies the condition \(u_0(x) \in W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb R^N)\), \(P_0=\{x\in \mathbb R^N:u_0(x)>0\} \subset B(0,R_0)\), with \(R_0>0\), \(u_0(x) \geq 0\) is not identically equal to zero. Then, the mapping \(t\mapsto P(t)\) gives a non-decreasing family of bounded open subsets of \(\mathbb R^N\), i.e., \(P(t_1) \subseteq P(t_2)\) for all \(0\leq t_1\leq \infty\).
