According to a general theorem of \textit{H. W. Lenstra jun.} et al. [J. Algebra 180, No. 2, 513--516 (1996; Zbl 0861.14037)], any abelian variety admits only finitely many abelian subvarieties upto isomorphism. The present paper gives a slightly more precise statement in the special case of Jacobians of superelliptic curves, i.~e., smooth projective models of curves \(C_{f,d}\) with equation \(y^d= f(x)\), where \(f\) is a polynomial of degree \(n\). For simplicity we assume that \(f\) is not a power of another polynomial. The main result is the following statement: For all positive integers \(n\) and \(g\) there is a constant \(d_0\) depending only on \(n\) and \(g\) such that a certain explicit quotient of the Jacobian of \(C_{f,d}\) has no abelian subvariety of dimension \(\leq g\) for all \(d\geq d_0\). The constant \(d_0\) is not effective in general. The main ingredient of the proof is a result of \textit{N. Archinard} [Can. J. Math. 55, No. 5, 897--932 (2003; Zbl 1038.11036)].
