If \(G\) is a finite group, it is well known that the irreducible representations of its Drinfeld double are parametrized by pairs \((g,M)\), where \(g\) runs in a set of representative elements of the conjugacy classes of \(G\) and \(M\) is an irreducible representation of the centralizer \(C_G(g)\): the associated irreducible representation is given by an induction process [\textit{R. Dijkgraaf} et al., Nucl. Phys., B, Proc. Suppl. 18B, 60--72 (1990; Zbl 0957.81670)]. A similar result is stated here for a class of semisimple Hopf algebras, called generalized quantum doubles, based on pairs \(U\) and \(V\) of semisimple Hopf algebras with a surjective morphism from \(U\) to \(V^{*\mathrm{cop}}\). For such a Hopf algebra, it is shown that its irreducible representations are induced from a representation of a special Hopf subalgebra. This description allows to give formulas for the fusion rules of semisimple Drinfeld doubles, and this shows that the structure of their Grothendieck ring is similar to the one of Drinfeld doubles of finite groups.
