The paper under review deals with the Weinstein functional defined on a maniforld \(M\) as \[ W_M(u)=\dfrac{\|u\|^{p+1}_{L^{p+1}}}{\|u\|^\alpha_{L^2}\|\nabla u\|^\beta_{L^2}} \] with \(\alpha=2-(n-2)(p-1)/2,\) \(\beta=n(p-1)/2,\) \(n=\dim(M)\) and \(p\) is keeped in the Sobolev sub-critical range \((1,(n + 2)/(n - 2)).\) The author is primarily interested in the existence of maximizers of the Weinstein functional on the hyperbolic space \(\mathbb{H}^n\) or, equivalently, existence of extremal functions for the best constant of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. The main result of the paper asserts that the supremum of the Weinstein functional on \(\mathbb{H}^n\) is the same as that on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and the related fact that the supremum is not attained on \(\mathbb{H}^n\) when functions are chosen from the Sobolev space \(H^1(\mathbb{H}^n).\) An analogous result is proved also for the Weinstein functional defined with the fractional Laplacian.
