The numerical identification of the transient boundary heat transfer coefficient is investigated for a one-dimensional finite slab medium when the active surface radiates energy according to a known nonlinear law and is heated by a known transient boundary source. The inverse heat conduction problem is solved using a fully explicit and stable space marching scheme based on a finite difference implementation of the mollification method, and the transient heat boundary coefficient is then approximately determined. Stability bounds are derived and several numerical examples to validate the technique are presented.
