An inverse heat conduction problem is investigated for the one- dimensional semi-infinite and finite length conductor. The temperature at the active boundary is sought for together with the initial temperature distribution in the conductor under the assumption that the temperature variations are given at fixed locations inside the body and at the second edge. A mollified stable version of the inverse problems under consideration are presented and a space marching finite difference method of solution is proposed. Several examples of computational experiments are given showing numerical stability and good accuracy of the results.
