According to Heath and Dijksterhuis, Archimedes' proof of a summation rule, as given in proposition 1 of his ``Conoids and spheroids'', is not correct. The author shows that this is not true, because a proof along the lines supplied by Heiberg was actually not part of Archimedes' text. F. Commandino has in his Latin edition of Archimedes (1558) a correct treatment by supplying the derivations which Archimedes omitted for the intermediate steps of his proof.
