Let \(D\) denote the unit disc in \(\mathbb{C}\) and let \(F\) be a family of functions on \(\overline D\) which are holomorphic on \(D\). Some conditions on \(F\) are given which guarantee that if \(h:D\to\mathbb{R}\) is continuous and \[ {1\over 2\pi}\int^{2\pi}_ 0h(w(e^{i\theta}))d\theta=h(0) \] for any \(w\in F\) then \(h\) is harmonic in \(D\). With some suitable family \(F\) one can obtain the characterization of harmonic functions of \textit{J. Globevnik} and \textit{W. Rudin} [Indag. Math. 50, No. 4, 419-426 (1988; Zbl 0705.31001)]. The above result is used in connection with the description of the hull of holomorphy of subsets of a hypersurface \(M\) in \(\mathbb{C}^ 2\) and also with the so-called type function.
