The author analyzes wireless transmission channels from the viewpoint of pseudodifferential operators. It is shown that the mobile radio channel can be modeled as a pseudodifferential operator \(H_\sigma\) whose symbol belongs to \({\mathcal F}L_w^1({\mathbb R}^2)\) or alternately to a specific modulation space, also known as weighted Sjöstand's class. For such \(H_\sigma\) an approximate diagonalization is derived via Gabor systems \(\{\varphi_{k,l}\}\) with \(k,l\in{\mathbb Z}\) for a properly chosen window \(\varphi\). It is shown that the matrix \([\langle H_\sigma\varphi_{k,l},\varphi_{k',l'}\rangle]\) with \(k,l,k',l'\in{\mathbb Z}\) belongs to a Wiener-type Banach algebra of matrices with very fast off-diagonal decay. The approximate diagonalization provides useful insight into the design of transmission pulses and equalizers for mobile wireless communication systems to cope with intersymbol interference due to delay spread leading to time dispersion caused by multipath propagation and also to cope with interchannel interference due to Doppler shifts for narrow band signals caused by the relative motion between transmitter and receiver.
