Large linear systems with semidefinite matrices arise in the solution of pure Neumann problems. If the matrix is made invertible by modifying the last element in the matrix, iterations with incomplete Cholesky factorization suffer from the large condition number. Therefore, the authors consider the modification of the matrix by deflation. The paper does not discuss whether the sparsity of the matrix is reduced by the deflation.
