Given a linear \(n\) degree of freedom system of \(n\) point masses simply interconnected by springs, the authors' aim is to reconstruct a stiffness matrix and a mass matrix from prescribed natural frequencies or modalities or some physical parameters. After a discussion of the general properties, three particular different problems are considered. Conditions for uniqueness and existence of solutions are provided and an algorithm for the solution of the third problem is implemented. Some detailed numerical examples show the efficiency of the algorithm and enlighten the presented results.
