A subset \(\mathcal S\) of \(n\) points of the projective space \(P = PG(d,q)\) is called a \textsl{two-character set}, if the cardinality of the intersection with any hyperplane of \(P\) can only take two values. The authors construct two-character sets of \(P = PG(5,q^2)\) for even \(q\) defined by the orbits of the action of the finite exceptional simple group \(G_2(q)\) on the points of \(P\). Their construction is based on an idea of \textit{J. A. Thas} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 21, 115--117 (1976; Zbl 0332.05020)].
