    Let \(a\) be a divergence-free vector field in \(\mathbb R^d\) (\(d\geq 3\)). This paper deals with the Cauchy problem for the nonstationary incompressible Navier-Stokes system \(\partial_tu-\Delta u+(u\cdot\nabla )u=-\nabla p\), div\(\, u=0\), \(u(x,0)=a(x)\), where \(u=(u_1,\ldots ,u_d)\) is the velocity field and \(p\) denotes the pressure. The main result establishes that solutions \(u(x,t)\) starting from mild decaying data behave as \(| x| \rightarrow\infty\) as a potential field. It is also deduced that, for well localized data, for small \(t\) and large enough \(| x| \), then \(ct| x| ^{-d-1}\leq | u(x,t)| \leq c't| x| ^{-d-1}\), where the lower bound holds on the complement of a set of directions of arbitrary small measure on \(\mathbb S^{d-1}\).
