Particular classes of congruences (as \(R\)-unipotent or inverse or group congruences) on eventually regular semigroups \(S\) were described by the authors by means of kernels and hyper-traces [Algebra Colloq. 14, No. 1, 37-52 (2007; Zbl 1119.20055)]. Using these concepts, in the paper under review regular resp. orthodox congruences on such semigroups \(S\) are characterized by congruence pairs consisting of a certain congruence on the subsemigroup of \(S\) generated by the set of idempotents of \(S\) and a certain normal subsemigroup of \(S\). The results obtained generalize theorems on congruences of regular semigroups given by \textit{G. M. S. Gomes} [Semigroup Forum 37, No. 2, 149-169 (1988; Zbl 0638.20035)]. Originally, the concept of congruence pair was introduced for regular semigroups by \textit{F. Pastijn} and \textit{M. Petrich} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, 607-633 (1986; Zbl 0599.20095)].
