It is known that a compact complex manifold which admits as universal cover a bounded domain in \(\mathbb C^n\) is projective and its canonical bundle is ample. Moreover the bounded domain is a domain of holomorphy. On the other hand, every symmetric bounded domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb C^n\) occurs as universal cover of such a manifold since it admits a freely acting cocompact discrete group \(\Gamma\subset\) Aut\((\Omega)\). In the present article the authors focus on polycylinders \(\mathbb H^n\) and on bounded symmetric domains \(\Omega\) of tube type. Generalizing results for low dimensions by \textit{F. Catanese} and \textit{M. Franciosi} [Contemp. Math. 496, 157--179 (2009; Zbl 1181.14039)] they present necessary and sufficient conditions for an \(n\)-dimensional projective manifold \(X\) with ample canonical bundle to be uniformized by \(\mathbb H^n\) resp. \(\Omega\). Like in the above cited paper the notion of semi special tensor (resp. slope zero tensor) on \(X\) is used for a nonzero element in \(H^0(S^n(\Omega_X^1)(-K_X)\oplus \eta)\) (resp. in \(H^0(S^{mn}(\Omega_X^1)(-mK_X)), m\in\mathbb N^+)\), where \(\Omega_X^1\) is the holomorphic cotangent bundle on \(X\) and \(\eta\) an invertible sheaf with \(\eta^2\cong{\Omega}_X\). The main results are as follows: \(X=\Omega/\Gamma\) if and only if \(X\) admits a slope zero tensor. In this case a Galois conjugate of \(X\) also has \(\Omega\) as universal cover. The universal cover of \(X\) is holomorphically equivalent to a product of irreducible bounded domains \(D_j\) of tube type with rank \(D_j|\)dim\(D_j\) if and only if \(X\) admits a semi special tensor. The universal cover of \(X\) is holomorphically equivalent to the polycylinder \(\mathbb H^n\) if and only if \(X\) admits a semi special tensor \(\psi\) with the property that for every \(p\in X\) the hypersurface \(\{\psi_p=0\}\), defined by the associated polynomial \(\psi_p\) on \(\mathbb P(TX_p)\), is reduced. One main tool for the proof is a theorem about rational inner functions on bounded symmetric domains by \textit{A. Korányi} and \textit{S. Vági} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 254, 179--193 (1979; Zbl 0439.32006)].
