The paper comprehensively discusses Leonardo's treatment of linear equations (``tree problems'') and advanced problems by the method of single false position in \textit{Liber Abbaci}. It is shown that by a mere translation of Leonardo's rhetorical methods into symbolic algebra important aspects regarding his use of formulaic phrases may be obscured. Moreover, Leonardo's persistent pursuit of proof and explanation is connected with characteristic properties of his rhetoric.
