The author is concerned with the nonlinear difference equation with variable delay \[ x(n+1)-x(n)=F(n,x(g(n))),\,\,\,n=0,1,2,\ldots,\leqno(E) \] where \(F(n,\cdot):\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) is continuous, \(F(n,0)\equiv 0\) for \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), \(g:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{Z}\) is nondecreasing with \(g(n)\leq n\) for \(n\in \mathbb{N}\), and \(\lim_{n\to\infty}g(n)=\infty\). Under some assumptions on the function \(F\), he proves that every solution of \((E)\) tends to zero. A special case of equation \((E)\), namely: \[ x(n+1)-x(n)+r_nh(x(g(n)))=0,\quad n=0,1,2,\dots, \] where \((r_n)_n\) is a nonnegative sequence and \(h:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) is a continuous function with \(xh(x)>0\) for \(x\not= 0\), is also investigated.
