    The authors study the Sturm-Liouville problem \[ -(f y')' + q y = \lambda w y \] on \((a,b)\) and the separable self-adjoint boundary condition \[ \cos \alpha \cdot y (a) - \sin \alpha \cdot (f y') (a) = 0 = \cos \beta \cdot y (b) - \sin \beta \cdot (f y') (b), \] where \(- \infty \leq a < b \leq + \infty\), \(\frac{1}{f}\), \(q,w\in L ((a,b),\mathbb{R})\), \(w>0\), a.e. on \((a,b),\) \(\text{sgn} (t - c) f (t) > 0\) a.e. \((a,b)\) for some \(c \in (a,b),\) \(\alpha \in (0,\pi)\), \(\beta \in (0,\pi),\) and \(\lambda \in \mathbb{C}\) is the spectral parameter. \(L((a,b),\mathbb{R})\) denotes the space of real-valued Lebesgue integrable functions on \((a,b).\) Using interlacing relations (obtained in the paper) between the eigenvalues \(\lambda_n\) of the considered problem and the eigenvalues of some corresponding problems with a definite leading coefficient function, the authors prove asymptotic formulas for the \(n\)th eigenvalue.
