This is an expository paper on a number of homological conjectures, by one of the most famous experts in the field. Starting with the Syzygy Theorem of Evans and Griffith, the author is discussing several related intersection theorems. The direct summand conjecture and several other results which are either equivalent or imply this conjecture are considered. A characteristic \(p\) proof of the key lemma in the proof of the Syzygy Theorem, proof that uses a variant of tight closure is given. Among other subjects treated, there are also recent progress for the direct summand conjecture in dimension 3, the strong direct summand conjecture, recent results about when algebras over a local ring of characteristic \(p>0\) can be mapped to a big CM algebra. Finally, open homological questions about local rings are presented.
