A symmetric Riemann surface is a pair \((S,\tau)\), where \(S\) is a compact Riemann surface and \(\tau\) is a real structure on \(S\), i.e., an antiholomorphic involution \(\tau:S\to S\). The author assumes that the set of real points of \(S\), that means, the fixed point set of \(\tau\) is nonempty. This real structure induces another one \(\theta:J\to J\) on the Jacobian \(J\) of \(S\), which is compatible with the Abel-Jacobi map \(\mu: S\to J\), i.e., \(\mu\circ\tau=\theta \circ\mu\), and so one gets the restriction \(\mu|_{S(\mathbb{R})}:S(\mathbb{R})\to J(\mathbb{R})\) of the Abel-Jacobi map to the set of real points of \(S\). This map was extensively studied by \textit{V. A. Krasnov} [Math. Notes 32, 661--666 (1983; Zbl 0515.14028); Math. Notes 35, 391--396 (1984; Zbl 0568.14013)], who proved, among other things, that \(\mu|_{S(\mathbb{R})}\) is an embedding that maps distinct connected components of \(S(\mathbb{R})\) to distinct connected components of \(J(\mathbb{R})\) and that its symmetric power \((\mu|_{S (\mathbb{R})})^{(k)}:S(\mathbb{R})^{(k)}\to J(\mathbb{R})\) is surjective for large enough values of \(k\). The behaviour of the corresponding mapping \(\mu^{( k)}:S^{(k)}\to J\) among the sets of complex points is very well known, and the reader is referred to the classical works of [\textit{R. C. Gunning}, Lectures on Riemann surfaces: Jacobi Varieties (Princeton Math. Notes 12, Princeton) (1972; Zbl 0387.32008), \textit{D. Mumford}, Curves and their Jacobians (University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor) (1975; Zbl 0316.14010), and \textit{P. Griffiths} and \textit{J. Harris}, Principles of algebraic geometry (John Wiley \& Sons, New York) (1978; Zbl 0408.14001)]. The paper under review contributes to the understanding of the real situation in case \(S\) is hyperelliptic of genus \(g\geq k\). In fact, many results previously obtained by the author and \textit{V. A. Krasnov} [Math. Notes 75, 601--607 (2004; Zbl 1057.14069)], for genera 2 and 3 are generalized in this article.
