Let \(Y\) be a compact three-manifold with boundary consisting of tori and let \(L\subset Y\) be a nontrivial null-homotopic knot. Let \(\alpha\) be a simple closed curve on the boundary \(T\) of the regular neighborhood of \(L\), \(X\) be the three-manifold obtained from \(Y\) by surgery along \(\alpha\), which is the union of \(Y\) and a solid torus \(D\) by identifying \(\alpha\) and the meridian of \(D\). Suppose that \(X\) fibers over the circle with fiber \(F\) such that the intersection number \([F]\cdot[K]\) is zero, where \(K\subset X\) is the core of \(D\). Then the author proves that \(K\) can be isotoped in \(X\) to a curve in \(F\). Moreover the meridian \(\beta\) of \(T\) is the frame of \(K\) specified by \(K\subset F\). This gives a counterexample to a conjecture by Boileau [in: Problems in low-dimensional topology. (Edited by Rob Kirby). Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. AMS/IP Stud. Adv. Math. 2(pt.2), 35--473 (1997; Zbl 0888.57014)]: A non-trivial surgery on a null-homotopic knot in an orientable irreducible three-manifold produces a bundle over the circle if and only if the knot is a fibered knot and it is the longitudinal surgery. To prove this theorem the author uses Gabai's theory of sutured manifolds [\textit{D. Gabai}, J. Differ. Geom. 18, 445--503 (1983; Zbl 0533.57013), ibid. 26, 461--478 (1987; Zbl 0627.57012), ibid. 26, 479--536 (1987; Zbl 0639.57008)]. In a similar way the author also studies the case where surgery reduces the Thurston norm of the fiber of a three-manifold that fibers over the circle.
