In [\textit{M. Develin} and \textit{B. Sturmfels}, Doc. Math. 9, 1--27 (2004; Zbl 1054.52004)], regular subdivisions of the product of two simplices of dimension \(d\) and \(n-1\) were shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with combinatorial types of arrangements of \(n\) tropical \(d\)-dimensional hyperplanes. Axiomatizing simple combinatorial properties of tropical hyperplane arrangements, the authors introduce the notion of a tropical oriented matroid (in the same way as conventional matroids naturally arise, when considering conventional hyperplane arrangements). The authors conjecture that the aforementioned one-to-one correspondence can be extended to a bijection between tropical oriented matroids and all subdivisions (not only regular ones) of the product of simplices, and provide strong evidence for this conjecture, including the proof for \(d=2\).
