By a half-commutative orthogonal Hopf algebra we mean a Hopf \(\ast\)-algebra generated by the self-adjoint coefficients of an orthogonal matrix corepresentation \(v=(v_{ij})_{1\leq i,j\leq n}\), which half-commute in the sense that \(abc=cba\) for all \(a,b,c\in\{v_{ij}\mid 1\leq i,j\leq n\}\). The first example of such a Hopf algebra is, defined by \textit{T. Banica} and \textit{R. Speicher} [Adv. Math. 222, No. 4, 1461--1501 (2009; Zbl 1247.46064)], the half-liberated orthogonal Hopf algebra \(A_0^{\ast}(n)\). This Hopf algebra is, by definition, the universal \(\ast\)-algebra generated by self-adjoint elements \(\{v_{ij}\mid 1\leq i,j\leq n\}\), which half-commute and such that the matrix \(v=(v_{ij})_{1\leq i,j\leq n}\) in \(M_n(A_0^{\ast}(n))\) is orthogonal. In the paper under review, the authors: (i) perform a construction, which associates to a self-transpose compact subgroup \(G\subset U_n\) a half-commutative orthogonal Hopf algebra \(\mathcal{A}_{\ast}(G)\), with \(\mathcal{A}_{\ast}(U_n)\cong A_0^{\ast}(n)\). The Hopf algebra \(\mathcal{A}_{\ast}(G)\) is a Hopf \(\ast\)-subalgebra of the crossed product \(\mathcal{R}(G)\rtimes\mathbb{C}\mathbb{Z}_2\), where the action of \(\mathbb{Z}_2\) on \(\mathcal{R}(G)\) is induced by the transposition; (ii) prove that every noncommutative half-commutative orthogonal Hopf algebra is isomorphic to \(\mathcal{A}_{\ast}(G)\) for some self-transpose compact subgroup \(G\subset U_n\); (iii) describe the fusion rules of the Hopf algebra \(\mathcal{A}_{\ast}(G)\) for any self-transpose compact subgroup \(G\subset U_n\) in terms of those of the group \(G\).
