Let \(T\) be an \(n\)-dimensional torus acting on an oriented closed manifold \(M\), and assume that on \(M\) we are given an equivariant stable complex structure, i.e., an equivariant complex structure on the sum of the tangent bundle and some trivial bundle. Then Guillemin, Ginzburg and Karshon proved in [\textit{V. Guillemin, V. Ginzburg} and \textit{Y. Karshon}, Moment maps, cobordisms, and Hamiltonian group actions. Mathematical Surveys and Monographs 98. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2002; Zbl 1197.53002)], Theorem H.4, that \(M\) is cobordant to zero if and only if all its equivariant characteristic numbers are zero, where the equivariant characteristic numbers are the elements in \(H^*(BT,{\mathbb Z})\) that are given by integration of a monomial in the equivariant Chern classes over \(M\). In this paper the authors restrict to the special case that the acting torus has half the dimension of \(M\) and that it has fixed points, i.e., that \(M\) is a so-called unitary torus manifold. In this case, using the localization formula in equivariant cohomology and some combinatorical arguments, they show that the vanishing of all equivariant Chern numbers is equivalent to the vanishing of a certain subset of these, namely those which involve only products of powers of the first and second equivariant Chern class. This result is applied to prove a statement about the number of fixed points of a \(2n\)-dimensional torus manifold: if it does not bound equivariantly, then the number of fixed points is at least \(\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil+1\). This result is evidence for the validity of a conjecture of Kosniowski about the number of fixed points of unitary \(S^1\)-actions.
