The author is concerned with the traffic operational quality of highway transportation facilities, assuming that all demand is known in advance. The author introduces -illustrated by a series of examples - into basic elements, f.e. modeling the motion of a single vehicle and the interactions of groups of vehicles (car following, lane chanching, gap accepture); furthermore the book introduces in an elementary way into the characteristics of traffic stream: flow, speed, density, capacity and related traveltimes under non-congested and congested conditions. The third part deals with analytic techniques, especially with stochastic microsimulation, and the developement of a microsimulator. A more detailed analysis of highway facilities, signalized intersections, arterials and networks are presented in the final part including some remarks on the design resp. redesign of freeway segments and systems. This book may be helpful in a one-semester course for students starting studies in transportation engineering.
